Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
